Birth Control Q & A

What birth control services are available?

Distinctive Women’s Health Care offers comprehensive birth control services to help you avoid pregnancy or appropriately plan for your family of the future.

Available birth control options include:

Taken daily, birth control pills deliver hormones into your bloodstream to regulate your menstrual cycle and prevent pregnancy.

Intrauterine devices

Hormonal and nonhormonal devices can be placed in the office setting. Depending upon how long each patient wants to defer pregnancy.

Injections of the progestin hormone go into your arm or buttocks. You need an injection every three months to prevent pregnancy.

A diaphragm is a barrier method of birth control. You insert the cup-like device into your vagina before sex. The diaphragm covers your cervix to block sperm and prevent conception.

Distinctive Women’s Health Care also offers intrauterine devices (IUDs). An IUD is a small, t-shaped device that Dr. Kotzen places inside your uterus. It releases steady amounts of the hormone progestin to prevent pregnancy. If you can’t tolerate hormones, a nonhormonal IUD contains copper that’s toxic to sperm to prevent pregnancy.

Which birth control method is right for me?

To help you decide on the right method of birth control, Dr. Kotzen reviews your medical history, your existing health, and if you have plans for a family. He also discusses your lifestyle and sexual health to determine which type of birth control is more convenient and effective.

What options are available for permanent birth control?

If you’re done having children or never care to have a child, Dr. Kotzen can discuss your options for permanent contraception.

The practice offers tubal occlusion procedures, a same-day hospital-based surgery that will dramatically reduce your chances of becoming pregnant.
